Carol Campbell Inspiration Award – Jana Stevens, Owner and President, Phoenix Systems

A visionary leader and industry pioneer, Jana’s impact on the consumer technology industry spans over four decades. In 1979, she co-founded Phoenix Systems, establishing what would become the San Francisco Bay Area’s premier home integration company. As a trailblazing female business owner in a male-dominated field, Jana developed Phoenix Systems into a source of innovation that served Silicon Valley’s most influential figures, including Bill Hewlett, Andy Grove, and Larry Ellison.

With Jana’s partnership, Phoenix Systems created groundbreaking solutions that would shape the future of home technology installations. The company’s innovative AudioAccess product line was so transformative that it earned a place in the CEDIA Product Hall of Fame. When Harman International acquired Phoenix Systems in 1993, it was specifically to serve as their “racing team” for product innovation and development.

In 2000, Jana made the bold move to repurchase Phoenix Systems from Harman International, becoming one of the first women to independently own and operate an integration company. Her leadership style, characterized by integrity, high standards, and unwavering encouragement, fostered an environment of excellence and innovation. Jana’s commitment to knowledge-sharing and industry development led her to co-host AudioAccess integrator conferences, bringing together professionals from around the United States and helping to establish a foundation for industry-wide standards and practices.

Beyond her business achievements, Jana’s legacy includes her advocacy for women in the industry. She played a pivotal role in forming the first meeting of Women in CE and consistently championed the recognition of women’s contributions to the field. Her mentorship and support empowered women to envision themselves as creators and leaders in their own right.

Perhaps most significantly, Jana’s suggestion to “start a trade association” helped catalyze what would become a cornerstone organization in the consumer technology integration industry, demonstrating her foresight in recognizing the need for professional development and collaboration.
